History and background

Like many churches in this area, Baileys Chapel began its life as a series of services held under a brush arbor. Each summer families who lived on and near Carters Creek would gather together under the oak trees which grew on a hill overlooking the creek. There they would join together for singing and worship. These first brush arbor meetings were organized by Mr. Capp Bailey. He owned the land where the meetings were held and he would secure the services of preachers from the various churches in the surrounding communities. In approximately 1912 Baileys Chapel was officially organized as a non-denominational church. Mr. Bailey donated the land which had been used for the brush arbor meetings to the fielding church and also donated money for the building of the church. Trees were cut from the church site and the surrounding woods, and were used for the lumber during the constructing of the building. Mr. Bailey hired carpenters to help with the construction and they along with members of the community raised the church in a little over a years period of time. The completed building was of white weatherboard and, as was the style of the time, was not underpinned. It has one large bell tower, which also serves as the main entrance, and a smaller bell tower located on the west side of the building. Over the years, beautiful stained glass windows have been purchased and added to the building as memorials to past and present members. In response to Mr. Baileys generosity to the church and his dedication to the building of the church, Mr. Bailey was given the honor of having the new church named Baileys Chapel; after the Bailey family cemetery which lies behind the church.Although Baileys Chapel is a small church it regularly has the highest percentage of its enrolled members present each Sunday. You need only make one visit to Baileys Chapel to discover that its members are very committed to worship in their church, and that they are very committed to its survival. At Baileys Chapel, one finds a feeling of oneness and a community of fellowship that is all too often missing in the larger churches. If you would like to attend a church to worship in an atmosphere uncluttered by complicated programs, just Christians joining together to worship God as they have done for the past hundred years, then please feel free to join us at Baileys Chapel UMC.
